Don’t Waste Anytime Submitting To Directories Until You Read This!
I have been marketing websites for quite some time now, and because of that I am often asked about a number of things regarding directory submissions. First let me say that if the only marketing you are planning on doing is directory submission, then give up right now! Directory submissions are not the end all save all for SEO campaigns like some people think they are. They are only a small piece of the puzzle, and even then, only if they are done correctly.
There is much debate going on in the search industry if directory submissions even do you any good anymore. Â I have done several independent tests on sites, and can confirm that submitting to the right directories, and proper submission (to help SEO purposes) can in fact help rankings (so it does do good still, in my opinion based on personal case studies).
You have to remember that even if it does not work well for search engines like Google (as much as it use to), there are other major search engines out there as well as 2nd and 3rd tier search engines that submitting to directories could help gain rankings and increase overall traffic. I still think that Google does take into consideration passing link juice from high quality directories, or they would not suggest submitting sites to places like the Yahoo Directory.
If you can find a directory that has been around for a while, and carries a lot of trust, and get a link with them it will do your site some good. How much good it will do you, is how you go about submitting. If you submit to the wrong category, or even a category that would work, but is not the best, it will not do you as much good. If you are wanting an easy method to find out how to get Google to tell you the best category/subcat to submit your site to, just follow this piece of advice; In the Google search bar do the following if you are wanting to find the best place to submit a site (on abilogic.com, which I do recommend) selling memory foam mattresses – “memory foam mattress” “abilogic.com” (If this does not make sense, click on the link and pay attention to how it shows up in the search bar).
Once you find the best possible category to submit your site to, that is only half the battle. You need to make sure you are submitting the right information to the directory. The right information that will actually do something for you SEO-wise. When you are at the point of submission make sure when you are asked for the title to only use keywords that people would be using to search for you. Do not include the name of your website in the title either. Again, only use words that people are actually using to search (keywords). Rotate the keywords that you use as well. If you are trying to be found for the word “memory foam mattress”, dont just use that exact phrase in the title for every directory you submit to. Use a variety of anchor text related to the word such as “memory foam”, “foam mattress”, “foam bed” and so on.  I think that gives you a pretty good idea.
I have found a pretty amazing list of directories that actually do something for you (SEO-wise) when you submit to them. I would encourage everyone to visit this site and submit to all the directories they recommend in the article.
I hope I have cleared up the issue of submitting to directories being a waste of time or not. Granted, there are directories out there that are worthless and are a waste of time when you submit to them, but the list I showed above is not in that group. You will gain better trust from the search engines, and improve search engine rankings by submitting to powerful trusted directories, especially when you have submitted to them properly.
