Dropshipping: Fraud Alert.

February 26th, 2009

At Wholesale Match we are constantly bringing on new customers that are brand new to dropshipping. With so many of our new customers utilizing eBay as a marketplace source to sell their products I decided to give a heads up, or more like a fraud alert, to those who are new at selling on eBay.

While the benefits to selling on eBay are great, new sellers do not know that they are a potential target of fraud to be committed against them. Fraud most often occurs when a new seller lists a high dollar item such as a big screen television or a laptop computer, etc. Once the item is listed they are contacted almost immediately buy someone who is very interested in their product and they want to pay top dollar to have it shipped overseas. The catch is that they want to have shipping confirmation before they submit the funds through paypal. I have also seen scams that are as intricate as a duplicated pay pal email sent directly to the sellers email address saying that the funds have been deposited in their account and they need to ship the item as soon as possible. These people who are committing fraud are very smart and detailed, promising more money than you are requesting to get the seller exited about completing the sell and giving no reason for the seller to question the legitimacy of the sell.
Though the scammers are very cunning, there are ways to prevent fraud from happening to you. Most scammers will initiate and continue to contact you through your own personal email, rather than through eBay’s contact system. They do this because eBay tracks all contact through their system and the scammer don’t want to run the risk of getting caught. Also you can confirm deposits into your paypal account by contacting paypal and verifying the deposit. You may also want to consider limiting your shipping to the Continental U.S. only. If you do have someone inquire from overseas, explain that you would have to ship the item to someone who can accept it within the U.S. and they would then be responsible to forward the product internationally. EBay also has a fraud protection department, to try and protect its buyers and sellers from such scammers therefore it is very important to follow all of their policies and procedures so that they can help protect you.
