If you’re a fraction of the Lost fanatic I am, you’ve probably noticed the promotional campaigns advertising the heck out of the final season.  ABC’s promotions of Lost are some of the most creative, varied, and interactive that I’ve seen.  They function as an excellent educational tool for people who want to learn how to market their online business.

What can Lost teach you about promoting your online business?

1. People love games, mysteries, and exclusivity.

Lost ran a number of scavenger hunts and secret events where people could get website addresses to buy exclusive Lost posters.  These posters were funky, graphic, and offered tantalizing teasers for the upcoming season.  How could you use the same marketing techniques to promote your online business?  You could offer a prize to every 50th customer, or free shipping to anyone who can find the “Golden Key” on your website.  You could also commission unique t-shirts that would only be available to people who could solve a puzzle or riddle on your website.

Lost ran a promotion where fans could write the themesong for the upcoming season.  This was an extremely interactive event that engaged fans physically and mentally.  How can do the same with your marketing campaigns?  You could ask people to design a new logo or catchphrase for your online business (offering a prize to the winner, of course).  Think how sticky your business will be to someone who has spent time coming up with a design or slogan for your company.  Customer interaction helps your online business to stand out from the hundreds of other websites people have visited.
